About this video
Hester Street (1975) is a powerful American period drama directed by Joan Micklin Silver, based on Abraham Cahan’s acclaimed 1896 novella Yekl: A Tale of the New York Ghetto. Set in New York City’s Lower East Side in the late 19th century, the film follows Jake, a Jewish immigrant struggling to balance his old-world identity with his new American life, and his wife Gitl, who arrives from Eastern Europe to join him.
Starring Academy Award-nominated Carol Kane as Gitl and Steven Keats as Jake, Hester Street explores immigration, marriage, cultural identity, assimilation, family, tradition, and the difficult choices faced by newcomers building a life in America. The film’s richly detailed period setting and intimate storytelling bring the immigrant experience of New York’s Lower East Side vividly to life.
Released in 1975, Hester Street became one of the most acclaimed independent American films of its era and earned Carol Kane an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. With its authentic atmosphere, memorable performances, and deeply human story, the movie remains an important portrait of Jewish immigrant life and the changing social landscape of turn-of-the-century New York.
Watch Hester Street (1975) and experience Joan Micklin Silver’s acclaimed classic drama, featuring Carol Kane and Steven Keats in a compelling story of love, identity, tradition, immigration, and the pursuit of a new life in America.
