About this video
The Ninth Configuration (1980) is a dark, thought-provoking psychological drama written and directed by William Peter Blatty, best known for The Exorcist. Set in an isolated castle serving as a psychiatric facility for troubled Vietnam veterans, the film follows Colonel Kane (Stacy Keach), a new commanding officer whose unusual methods challenge the damaged men under his care.
Blending psychological drama, dark comedy, mystery, and existential themes, The Ninth Configuration explores faith, sacrifice, madness, identity, and the boundaries between sanity and selflessness. Among the patients is astronaut Billy Cutshaw (Scott Wilson), whose traumatic experiences and spiritual crisis become central to the story. The film gradually builds an unsettling atmosphere as the characters confront questions about courage, belief, human nature, and what it truly means to save another person.
Featuring a strong ensemble cast including Stacy Keach, Scott Wilson, Jason Miller, Ed Flanders, and Neville Brand, The Ninth Configuration remains a distinctive character-driven film with an unconventional narrative and deeply philosophical undertones. Its combination of psychological tension, dark humor, military setting, and spiritual questioning makes this 1980 film particularly relevant for viewers searching for cerebral psychological dramas and unusual cult cinema.
