About this video
Imitation of Life (1934) is a landmark American drama directed by John M. Stahl, starring Claudette Colbert, Louise Beavers, Warren William, Rochelle Hudson, and Fredi Washington. The story follows widowed mother Beatrice Pullman and her daughter Jessie after they take in Delilah Johnson and her daughter Peola, leading to a successful business partnership and deeply personal conflicts.
Blending drama, romance, and social themes, the film explores family, ambition, identity, motherhood, and racial tensions in 1930s America. As Bea’s business grows, the changing relationships between the two families become increasingly complicated, particularly as Peola struggles with her identity and seeks to pass as white, while Jessie develops feelings for Bea’s fiancé, Stephen Archer.
Based on Fannie Hurst’s novel, Imitation of Life remains an important pre-Code era film and a notable example of 1934 Hollywood drama. This 1080p presentation features the classic performances of Claudette Colbert as Beatrice Pullman, Louise Beavers as Delilah Johnson, and Fredi Washington as Peola Johnson. Its combination of family drama, romance, social commentary, and enduring emotional themes makes it a significant classic cinema title.
