About this video
Wekande Walauwa (2002), also known as Wekande Walawwa (වෑකන්ද වලව්ව), is a Sri Lankan Sinhala-language drama film directed and written by legendary filmmaker Lester James Peries. Starring Malini Fonseka, Ravindra Randeniya, Vasanthi Chathurani, Sanath Gunathilake and Paboda Sandeepani, the film explores family tensions, social change, wealth, tradition and the emotional struggle surrounding a wealthy Sri Lankan household.
Inspired by Anton Chekhov’s acclaimed play The Cherry Orchard, Wekande Walauwa presents a distinctly Sri Lankan setting and perspective while examining changing social values and the conflicts that emerge when an established way of life begins to disappear. Its ensemble cast includes Iranganie Serasinghe, Lucky Dias and other notable Sri Lankan performers.
A significant work in Sri Lankan cinema, Wekande Walauwa was screened out of competition at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival and became Sri Lanka’s first submission for consideration in the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film category for the 75th ceremony. The film also received the UNESCO Fellini Gold Medal. For viewers exploring classic Sinhala cinema, Lester James Peries films, Malini Fonseka movies, Sri Lankan drama films and adaptations of The Cherry Orchard, Wekande Walauwa remains an important cinematic title.
