About this video
Tomboy (1985) is an American comedy centered on Tomasina “Tommy” Boyd, a determined young woman who works as a mechanic and dreams of becoming a stock car driver. Her passion for cars and racing sets her apart in a world where she is constantly challenged to prove that she belongs behind the wheel. Directed by Herb Freed, the film stars Betsy Russell as Tommy, with Gerard Christopher and Kristi Somers in key roles.
When celebrated stock car racer Randy Starr enters Tommy’s life, romance and competition quickly collide. Tommy is attracted to Randy, but his chauvinistic attitude pushes her to prove herself on the racetrack as well as win his respect. Her driving ability leads to an opportunity where the two rivals must compete for a valuable sponsorship deal, raising the stakes for both their relationship and racing ambitions.
Blending romantic comedy, motorsport, youthful energy and a strong female lead, Tomboy captures the style of 1980s American teen cinema while focusing on independence, ambition and determination. Featuring Betsy Russell as Tomasina “Tomboy” Boyd, Gerard Christopher as Randy Starr and Kristi Somers as Seville Ritz, this 1985 racing comedy is a nostalgic choice for viewers interested in vintage American movies, stock car racing and classic 1980s entertainment.
