Chintu Ka Birthday

Chintu Ka Birthday (2020) is a Hindi-language Indian comedy-drama film that blends humour, family relationships, and the harsh realities of life in a conflict-affected environment. Set in Afghanistan, the story follows an Indian family stranded in Kabul during the war, trying to celebrate the birthday of their young son, Chintu. What should be a joyful family occasion becomes an unexpectedly complicated day, as the family struggles to create a sense of normality amid uncertainty, danger, and circumstances beyond their control.

At the heart of Chintu Ka Birthday is the innocent wish of a young child to celebrate his special day. His family tries to arrange a birthday celebration despite their difficult situation, highlighting the extraordinary lengths parents go to protect their children's happiness. As unexpected events unfold, the film explores the contrast between childhood innocence and the realities of war, using intimate family moments, understated comedy, and emotional storytelling to create a memorable cinematic experience. Rather than relying on spectacle, the movie builds its impact through relatable characters, everyday struggles, and the simple desire for happiness in an uncertain world.

Set in Baghdad, Iraq, during the aftermath of the 2003 US invasion, the film features powerful performances from Vinay Pathak, Tillotama Shome, Seema Pahwa, Vedant Chibber, and Khaled Masso. Vinay Pathak portrays Madan Tiwary, a determined father who refuses to let the surrounding turmoil completely destroy his son's birthday. Tillotama Shome brings warmth and emotional depth to Sudha Tiwary, while Vedant Chibber captures Chintu's innocence and childlike excitement. Their performances bring authenticity to a story about family, compassion, displacement, and the human connections that can emerge even in the darkest circumstances.
