The science fiction mystery thriller UFO (2018) explores one of humanity’s most enduring fascinations: the possibility that we are not alone in the universe. Directed and written by Ryan Eslinger, the film presents a thoughtful and intellectual take on extraterrestrial phenomena, combining suspense, mathematics, conspiracy theories, and scientific curiosity into a gripping narrative that keeps audiences questioning what they believe about unidentified flying objects. Starring Alex Sharp, Gillian Anderson, Ella Purnell, and David Strathairn, the film revolves around a brilliant college mathematics student whose relentless quest to uncover the truth behind mysterious UFO sightings leads him into a world of scientific discovery, government secrecy, and cosmic possibilities. The story begins with Derek Echevaro, a highly intelligent but socially awkward mathematics prodigy who has been haunted since childhood by an unexplained aerial phenomenon he once witnessed. Years later, when multiple airports across the United States report mysterious disturbances involving unknown flying objects disrupting flight patterns and air traffic communications, Derek becomes convinced that these events are connected to extraterrestrial technology. Using his exceptional analytical abilities and passion for mathematical patterns, he begins analyzing radar signals, flight paths, electromagnetic interference, and cryptic data patterns associated with the sightings. Derek’s journey is not merely about proving the existence of aliens but about demonstrating that the universe operates through complex mathematical constants that might serve as a universal language shared by advanced civilizations. With the help of his girlfriend Natalie and the cautious guidance of his mathematics professor Dr. Hendricks, Derek dives deep into theoretical physics, cosmic frequencies, and numerical anomalies that may reveal a hidden message embedded in the sightings themselves. As he examines recorded audio signals from airport communication systems, Derek begins noticing patterns within the disturbances—sequences that resemble mathematical constants tied to the fundamental structure of the universe. These discoveries lead him to theorize that the UFO sightings may not simply be random events but intentional signals from an advanced extraterrestrial intelligence attempting to communicate with humanity using mathematics as a universal language.

As Derek’s investigation intensifies, the narrative of UFO (2018) expands into a tense battle between curiosity and secrecy. The deeper Derek digs into the phenomenon, the more he attracts the attention of federal authorities who appear determined to control the information surrounding the sightings. Special Agent Franklin Ahls begins monitoring Derek’s activities, suspecting that the young mathematician may be interfering with sensitive government investigations. This conflict introduces a powerful theme within the film: the tension between individual discovery and institutional authority. Derek represents humanity’s relentless drive to explore and understand the unknown, while the government symbolizes caution, secrecy, and the fear of societal disruption that could occur if extraterrestrial contact were confirmed. Despite warnings and pressure to abandon his research, Derek refuses to stop searching for answers. His obsession grows stronger as he uncovers connections between multiple sightings across different locations, revealing that each event shares identical mathematical signatures hidden within their electromagnetic disturbances. These signals appear to correspond with the Fine Structure Constant, one of the most mysterious and fundamental constants in physics that governs the strength of electromagnetic interactions throughout the universe. Derek believes this constant might serve as a universal mathematical fingerprint—an unmistakable marker that intelligent extraterrestrial beings could use to signal their presence to scientifically advanced civilizations. The film portrays Derek’s investigation as both a thrilling intellectual puzzle and a deeply personal quest for truth. His determination strains his relationships and pushes him into increasingly risky territory as he attempts to prove his theory before authorities silence his research. Throughout this journey, the movie explores philosophical questions about humanity’s place in the cosmos. If extraterrestrial intelligence exists and has already reached Earth, what would it mean for science, religion, politics, and the future of human civilization? By framing the UFO phenomenon through the lens of mathematics and scientific reasoning, the film elevates the narrative beyond typical alien invasion tropes and instead focuses on the profound implications of interstellar communication.

The middle portion of UFO (2018) becomes increasingly suspenseful as Derek’s calculations begin predicting the timing and locations of future UFO appearances. Through meticulous analysis of past events, he identifies patterns that suggest the objects follow precise mathematical trajectories tied to cosmic constants and geometric relationships. Derek theorizes that these craft are not random visitors but part of a deliberate exploration or communication mission carried out by a civilization far more technologically advanced than humanity. His findings imply that extraterrestrial intelligence might be studying Earth while carefully avoiding direct contact, perhaps waiting until humanity reaches a certain level of scientific understanding before revealing themselves openly. Meanwhile, government agents continue to pressure Derek to abandon his work, warning him that his obsession could lead to dangerous consequences. These confrontations add a layer of paranoia and tension to the narrative, raising questions about whether authorities are genuinely protecting the public or hiding the truth about alien encounters. The film carefully balances scientific curiosity with emotional storytelling as Derek struggles to maintain credibility among skeptics who dismiss his theories as delusions. Even some of his closest allies begin doubting him as his behavior becomes more intense and unpredictable. Yet Derek remains convinced that he is on the verge of a groundbreaking discovery that could change humanity’s understanding of the universe forever. As he prepares to prove his theory by predicting another UFO appearance, the tension builds toward a climactic moment where science, belief, and reality collide. The movie cleverly uses mathematical concepts and cosmic mysteries to create an atmosphere of intellectual suspense rarely seen in traditional science fiction films.

The final act of UFO (2018) delivers a powerful conclusion that blends awe, wonder, and philosophical reflection. When Derek’s predictions lead him to a location where a UFO is expected to appear, he confronts the ultimate question that has driven his obsession: what happens when humanity finally proves that extraterrestrial intelligence exists? The encounter that follows is both mysterious and transformative, suggesting that the universe may be far more interconnected than humanity realizes. Rather than presenting aliens as hostile invaders, the film portrays them as distant observers operating on a level of intelligence and understanding that transcends human comprehension. The experience changes Derek’s perception of reality and reinforces the idea that scientific discovery often begins with curiosity, courage, and the willingness to challenge conventional thinking. The film concludes on a thought-provoking note, encouraging viewers to consider the vastness of the cosmos and the possibility that humanity may only be beginning to understand its place within it. By combining elements of mystery, science, philosophy, and suspense, UFO (2018) offers a unique take on the UFO genre—one that focuses less on spectacle and more on the intellectual and existential implications of discovering intelligent life beyond Earth. The movie ultimately serves as a meditation on curiosity itself, reminding audiences that humanity’s greatest breakthroughs often come from individuals brave enough to ask impossible questions and pursue answers beyond the boundaries of accepted knowledge. Through Derek’s journey, the film explores themes of discovery, skepticism, secrecy, and the boundless mysteries of the universe, making it a compelling entry in modern science fiction cinema and an intriguing exploration of the age-old question: are we truly alone in the universe?
