Producers stuffed the first half of the night with awards and attempted to fill the second half with emotional moments, resulting in a strange lopsided effect. The Michael J. Fox tribute and Mariska Hargitay's singing were among the highlights of an otherwise uneven 2026 Emmys telecast.

The 2026 Emmy Awards telecast was a tale of two halves — and neither half worked particularly well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter chief TV critic Daniel Fienberg, producers stuffed the first half of the night with awards and then attempted to fill the second half with emotional moments. The result was "a strange lopsided effect."

By the 90-minute mark, nearly every award had been handed out. What followed was a series of tribute segments and musical moments that couldn't quite sustain the show's momentum.

Among the highlights: a moving tribute to Michael J. Fox, whose presence and legacy brought genuine emotion to the stage. Mariska Hargitay also surprised audiences with a singing performance that stood out as one of the night's more memorable moments.

But these highs were tempered by the show's structural problems — awards crammed into the opening hour, emotional beats stretched thin across the rest, and a three-hour broadcast that felt both rushed and padded at the same time.

The evening ended awkwardly, with presenters Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reportedly asked to "just talk about anything" to fill remaining time. They did. As Fienberg put it, "I don't remember what they said."

It was, in the critic's words, "a clumsy, poorly paced night" — one saved occasionally by genuine emotion, but never quite finding its rhythm.
